who is a friend?
Is she the person
you meet every weekend
sharing a meal and laughter
Yes
but she is also the person
you hardly ever see
miles and days separate you
but nothing seems to change
each time you meet
who is a friend?
is she the woman
you call
after the lunch is made
and kids not yet home
exchanging recipes, tips on how to clean that stain and
to decide what to wear for the party tonight
Yes, maybe
but she is also the person
who forgets your special days
about your dress she may have nothing ever to say
but with your first hello in years
she hears the pain and the un-shed tears
and reaches you
no matter what time of night or day
putting everything else on hold
who is a friend
is she the one
who praises you and pats your back
when you’ve done something simply smack
Yes, definitely
But she is also the person
who stands up for you
behind your back
knowing fully well
it will draw her flak
and you may never really be aware
of the many ways she has shown her care
A friend is special
she is God’s gift
she is someone to cry and laugh with
gossip late into the nights
and share secrets with
the person who understands
your silence
the reasons for your stubborn defiance
a friend is the one you need
just to get by in life
A friend doesn’t need to be called every day
or heaps of gifts from you on her birthday
look around you
who are your friends?
The ones you know or call a friend
are undoubtedly so
but there are hopefully many more
the ones who
silently care for you
Look around you today
and say a special prayer
For the friends you know
and even those you unknowingly have
they make your world a better place
so include them in your thanksgiving grace

That really is a lovely poem. Nicola http://homemadekids.wordpress.com
thank you Nicola for the very kind comment 🙂
Oh my gosh, this gave me chills!!! How beautiful and how apt, how good!
thanks much 🙂 🙂 🙂 u made me smile
Quite a beautiful dedication to friends, showing the two sides, one who boosts you up in front of the world, and tells ur lows to you alone. Well written 🙂
the ideal friends! Often we tend to think of only those people as friends who we chat and spend time partying with. when in fact one’s true friends are also those who one hardly spends time with but who stand up for you when need arises. maybe the quiet girl in your class who stands up for you when someone’s speaking badly about you. She’s a true friend. even if she doesn’t even figure in your Party invitee list. Thanks for the appreciation. very encouraging
Loved it 🙂 And you have to be fairly lucky to have both kinds of friends.
true that. And to have them, know them and treasure them, for that you have to be exceptionally lucky 🙂
Wonderful ode to friends, who and what.
thank you valentine 🙂
wow what a lovely post.
so full of meaning
and yes friends come in many forms, many characters, and add different values to who we are.
but the best friend is one who sees your pains and your happiness without you having to say a word.
i pray i am such a friend for some people out there.
and i am thankful for my friends who turn to in my most desperate moments.
I am sure there is a huge number of people who count on you as a friend Amira! Cheers! to friends and friendship 🙂
Beautiful poem, Sapna. For me friends are those people who accept the unedited version of a person with a smiling face. 🙂 Nothing to hide and nothing to fake. And I also believe there are very few people who remain friends forever. I liked these words of yours a lot. 🙂
true Arindam! on both counts 🙂 Glad u liked it
Wonderful poem – here’s to friends far and near – thanks for the ping back!

**…Keep smiling.. keep shining..
